What is a provisional driver’s license? 

 
A provisional license—also called a junior operator license in some states—is the next step after a learner’s permit and before getting a full driver’s license.

Learner’s Permit 

For new drivers, usually ages 15–16 
Must drive with licensed adult 
Lasts about 6–12 months 

 

Provisional License 
Issued after learner’s permit

What are the requirements of a provisional license? 
 

To get a provisional license, you typically need to: 

 

  1. Be between 15 and 18 years old 

  1. Complete a driver’s education course 

  1. Hold a valid learner’s permit in your state 

  1. Complete the required number of supervised driving hours (varies by state) 

  1. Pass a road test (some states may also require a vision test and/or written test)
